From Safespeed's Paul Smith's 100 word highway code: 1. Drive on the left. Make sure you can see and be seen. Keep a constant look out all around. Be aware of signs and regulations and why they are there. Be predictable.
I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only one who is made angry by this Government and its never-ending war on the motorists.
A planned 2p increase in fuel duty will cause a lot of disbelief.
Here's what Brian Gregory from the Association of British Drivers says: "The ABD have always called for transparency when it comes to direct road user fuel taxation, and that they would like the Duty and VAT element clearly displayed on any pump and also a full breakdown on any receipt showing the separate amounts as a percentage that is represented by taxation for the Governments coffers!"
Now I think that's a great idea. There you are standing by the pump and seeing exactly how much you are forking out for the expensive failed policies of a Government that has lost popular support.
And here's what Edmund King, President of the AA says: "The AA have distributed over 10 million leaflets over the last few years at point of sale within Petrol Stations to show and explain the exact proportion of the money the customer pays for the fuel and the separate Fuel Duty and VAT elements that are taken by the Govenment."
And people still don't get angry?
This is backed up by the Freight Transport Association who say: "The FTA, along with other transport bodies, wish to see a clear breakdown on Fuel Duty and VAT elements so that the customer can see the disproportionate amount of tax paid on the actual fuel purchased!"
If the duty is increased (and I sincerely hope it isn't) there must be the mood of rebellion in the country. What, exactly, will it take for people to man the barricades?
Friends at the Treasury are telling me that the increase is 'done deal' because Darling wants to make a stamp on his first Budget, and also wants to apease the 'green issue' lobby.
Plus they have to find some money to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, which figures released today say that the bill has gone up by a total of 92% since last year! And that's with fewer troops deployed!
Also this new car tax for vehicles over the 225 limit will break the recommendations of the Stern Report, it was only to be £44 per tonne so this £1000-£2000 for a new car will go way over this. See the King Report.
We need to grow some balls and see some good old French Resolve and take to the streets, or perhaps its too late for that now!
