Such a shame about today's news about Mike Todd who has been found dead under snow on a windswept part of Snowdonia.

I met him on my travels whilst he was serving in the Metropolitan Police as an Assistant Commissioner at a party.

He was a gentleman, as I remember.

And I understand from friends in 'the job' that he was a copper's copper and was one of the good guys.

From what I remember he was very genuine and that was only a 20 minute conversation.

I divulged to him my true identity and he agreed with me that the UK was going towards policing by camera.

He said we needed to see bums on seats and traffic police out on the roads in numbers.

My sincere condolances to his family and friends.

Apparently he was destined to replace Sir Ian Blair in the Met. He would have done London proud.

This a quote from Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mike Todd in London's Evening Standard on 20 August 2001:

"... Mike Todd announced a freeze on the numbers of cameras in London arguing that installing more "for the sake of it would provoke a backlash from drivers."

This is from the Association of British Drivers website quoting Michael Todd as Chief Constable, Greater Manchester Police:

"I fear that if we prosecute more and more motorists and people have a perception that we are being unreasonable then there will be a backlash. We police be consent and need people to have confidence in the criminal justice system. We rely on people to report offences, to be witnesses and to be jurors in the fight against crime. Anything that undermines that support concerns me."

Truer words are never spoken...

Captain Gatso: National No Number Plate Day

It seems like this Government announces new policies every day which penalise law-abiding motorists.

As honest people, we play by the rules and stick an identity card on the front and rear of our vehicles (in the shape of a registration plate) but the country is awash with drivers who don't register their vehicles (or bother to get insured) and they are able to get away scott-free with committing road offences.

The Government and Police have spread Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras everywhere to watch and monitor - and there's been no debate about the how and why this should be done.

Even the cameras in supermarkets are being linked up to the main database.

This cannot go on.

Remember, the only people punished are those who abide by the rules and get punished for minor transgressions (And don't believe the nonsense that comes out every time this is mentioned along the lines of...if you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to worry about).

To this end - will people support me in organising a National No Number Plate Day? Take your plates off and put them in your windscreen.

They can't stop all of us!
